As the New York Knicks continue to fall to the bottom of the NBA standings, landing Zion Williamson in the 2019 NBA Draft would be worth it

The New York Knicks‘ rebuild may have taken a bit of a hit when Kristaps Porzingis went down with a torn ACL towards the latter porter of last season. However, it may have been the best thing to ever happen to this franchise in the last decade.

Hear me out. I would never wish injury on a player, that’s a pretty terrible thing to do – no matter how much you may dislike someone. However, if the Knicks continue the lose at the same rate that they have nearly halfway through the 2018-19 NBA season, there’s a real chance that they could finish the year as the odds on favorite to land the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

And should they land the top overall pick, that means they would land Zion Williamson. Landing Williamson would be so much meaningful that another year of progression for Porzingis, or even sneaking into the playoffs this season.

Adding Williamson to this roster means that years of irrelevance are over. It means that whenever the Knicks come to town, there is a reason to watch or even just care. Quite frankly, that’s not something that has always been the case over the last few years, if not the last decade.

Right now the Knicks are 9-28, fresh off a 32-point loss at the hands of the Utah Jazz. With the loss, the Knicks are tied with the Phoenix Suns for the second-worse record in the league. The only team in the league with a worst record is the Cleveland Cavaliers, who only have eight wins at this point in the season.

It’s going to be a tough battle to finish the year with the least amount of wins in the league, but there could be some hope. Considering that the Suns have a better overall roster than the Knicks (at the moment, especially if Kristaps doesn’t return this season), and that the expectation is that Kevin Love is going to return at some point in January, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that the Knicks could finish with the worst record in the NBA.

Meanwhile, Zion Williamson is lighting the NCAA on fire with his generation, freakish athleticism. He looks like a man among boys, and looks like he’s playing on an entire different level than his opposition on most nights.

Landing Williamson would successfully put the New York Knicks back on the NBA map, and if they can achieve this lofty goal it might be the best move this franchise has done – whether intentionally or not – in the last couple of decades.
