NBA Rumors: Robin Lopez would likely sign with the Golden State Warriors, if he can reach a buyout from the Chicago Bulls

If Robin Lopez had it his way, he’d be playing for a playoff contender at the moment. However, as his contract states, he must continue to suit up for the disappointing Chicago Bulls until further notice.

Lopez would reportedly like a buyout, and if he could get one from the Bulls would prefer to sign with the Golden State Warriors. That per Yahoo’s Chris Hayes, who also states that Chicago isn’t currently willing to negotiate a buyout at the moment.

"Lopez’s representation has been in discussions with the Bulls’ front office about an exit strategy since late December, sources told Yahoo Sports, but the franchise intends to stand firm."

"If the Bulls were to change course and reach a buyout agreement with Lopez, the Golden State Warriors would be his next destination, sources told Yahoo Sports."

As you’d expect, the Bulls would rather test the trade market for Lopez in the weeks leading up to the NBA Trade Deadline in an attempt to secure an asset in exchange for parting ways with their veteran center.

Lopez is no longer in the prime of his career, but is still a player that could help a team that is trying to make a second half playoff push, or one that needs some front-court depth in order to solidify their center position.

The Warriors are certainly one of those teams that could use Lopez, even with DeMarcus Cousins on the verge of making his season debut with the team. I’m not sure if Golden State would want to give up the type of asset that the Bulls would be looking for in exchange for Lopez, much less get in a bidding war for a backup center.

It’s becoming clear that the only way Lopez is going to find his way to the Warriors is if he can successfully get the Bulls to negotiate a buyout with him. And at this point, that’s looking more and more unlikely.
