It was no surprise when Woj reported that the Phoenix Suns were one of the teams that had engaged the Mavs in talks regarding Dennis Smith Jr. already. The Suns have a glaring need at the point guard position, and their timeline fits right in with the young DSJ.

DSJ is a player that they can stick next to Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton, and the Suns also have the potential assets that the Mavs would be seeking in any such trade for their second-year point guard, including draft picks.

In Phoenix, DSJ would come in right away and be the team’s starting point guard. He’d also have more freedom in a wide open offense, with little expectation. No one believes that the Suns are going to make much stride over the next couple of seasons. Do they have bright, young players? Absolutely, but this team is still very much a work in progress, and DSJ would have time to grow into his own in Phoenix.
