Brooklyn Nets: Losing Spencer Dinwiddie will spell trouble in their second-half push
The Brooklyn Nets have been one of the most surprising teams in the NBA this season, but losing their second starter will certainly hurt their playoff push
The Brooklyn Nets are on pace to finish in the top 8 of the Eastern Conference for the first time since the 2014-15 season. Entering this season, that’s not something that many – including Nets fans – wouldn’t predicted.
However, more than halfway through the 2018-19 NBA season, the Nets are sitting as the 6th seed in the East. The bad news is that Spencer Dinwiddie, one of the team’s most consistent player this season, will miss three to six weeks after opting for thumb surgery.
Dinwiddie is in the midst of the best season of his young career, averaging 17 points and five assists on 46 percent from the field and 37 percent from 3-point range. Specifically, since Caris LeVert has went down with injury, the team has seen a bump in production from Dinwiddie.
Dinwiddie, during the month of December, averaged 20 points and six assts. However, the team will have to learn to live without his production over the next few weeks. And it could have an impact on whether this team clinches a playoff berth or not.
Losing one starter hurt the team enough. Now, losing a second, I’m not sure if the Nets can stay afloat. With a number of teams on their trail, the Nets will need a strong finish to the season. Even more so if they drop a few games in the standings over the next few weeks, with Dinwiddie (and LeVert) out due to injury.
One more injury to a rotation player could really put a bind on this team’s outlook. Perhaps they could make a move at the NBA Trade Deadline to add a bit more depth to their roster ahead of the playoff push.
