After turning in a rough February, the San Antonio Spurs are now in real danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in 22 years

Just a few weeks ago, it was out of the realm of possibility for the San Antonio Spurs to clinch one of the top 5 seeds in the Western Conference. However, after sputtering down the standings during the month of February, there is legit doubt about whether or not the Spurs will even qualify for the playoffs altogether.

During the month of February, the Spurs have gone 3-7 and have fallen all the way to 8th in the standings and just one game ahead of the surging Sacramento Kings.

And their upcoming schedule doesn’t help any, with games against the Detroit Pistons, Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets over the next week.

The only real variable that will hope the Spurs moving forward is the fact that they have the 13th easiest schedule remaining in the NBA, and sixth easiest in the Western Conference. Additionally, 12 of their final 20 games of the season will be in San Antonio. If nothing else, that will help tip the scales in their favor a bit more.

Looking down the line, though, there is a ton of questions surrounding this team – and not just about whether or not this team is going to make the playoffs this season.

If anything, they’ve realized that this current core isn’t going to be the one to keep the Spurs afloat in the West. They don’t have a superstar on their team, and don’t have any young talent that could potentially blossom into that role.

On top of that, Gregg Popovich isn’t getting any younger – he just turned 70 years old – and likely won’t be willing to be a part of a long rebuild. There are legit questions that this team needs to answer during the summer, that go well beyond their success or failures this season.

The Spurs have made the NBA Playoffs for 21 straight seasons, which is an outstanding number when you look at all the difference franchises that have not sniffed any type of post-season success, but that could be on the verge of ending if they can’t play some excellent basketball over the course of the final few weeks of the regular season.
