Indiana Pacers: Tobias Harris is an ideal free agent target this summer
For the Indiana Pacers, Tobias Harris presents the perfect free agent target for a team that could find difficulty in pursuing big names
For a team like Indiana Pacers, it’s simply not enough to have max salary cap space. The Pacers could open up to $30-plus million of cap space this summer, depending on who they intend to re-sign during the offseason.
Simply put, if the team wanted to, they could pursue one of the max free agents this summer. However, it’s not as simple as just hoping for it. A team like the Pacers can’t just throw their hat in the running for a player like Kevin Durant or Kawhi Leonard. It’s a two-way street and not plenty of players would be interested in making the move to Indiana – especially when the likes of New York, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn are also in the running.
With that said, there is another close to max player that the Pacers should target instead. Tobias Harris.

Harris is in that second tier free agent group that could receive max offers, depending on where the top tier free agents land. He’s also the type of player that would fit right in with what the Pacers are building. Plus, apart from the Philadelphia 76ers (assuming they offer him a decent contract), the Pacers could be the next best option for Harris.
The Sixers have to be the favorites to land Harris, but in the event that they don’t believe he’s worth max money there’s a chance another team could jump in a steal the all-star caliber forward.
This past season, Harris averaged a career-high 20 points, eight rebounds, and four assists between his time with the Los Angeles Clippers and Sixers. He’s the type of talent that would perfectly complement Victor Oladipo (as he continues to recover from his injury) and a player that could play next to Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis.
Harris is the type of player that is going to answer to any role he’s placed in – whether it’s being the No. 2, 3 for 4 option in Indiana. Ideally, he’d be a perfect player to stick next to – and perhaps even help lead – the young core for the Pacers.
The big question, of course, is what the Pacers plan on doing with their free agents. If they intend to re-sign Thaddeus Young and Bojan Bogdanovic, they won’t have money to spend on a player like Harris. However, if one of both of those players moves on, Harris would almost certainly be in play.
If the Indiana Pacers are looking to make a big splash in free agency this summer, there might not be a better option for this team than Tobias Harris.
