Kevin Durant signing with the New York Knicks could be a disaster

Kevin Durant should consider signing with a championship contender this summer instead of being part of the New York Knicks rebuilding effort
Let’s face the facts for a moment. Kevin Durant is not a young NBA player anymore. He is getting older. He will be 31 years old before the start of next season. So, it is important for Durant to handle his free agency with extreme care, especially if he is going to sign a 3-5 year deal.
Durant is one of the top players, if not the best player, in the league. His game does not have any weakness in it. He is a nearly 7-foot player who can shoot the 3, beat opponents off the dribble and defend almost any player.
Lately, there have been a lot of rumors and speculations that Durant will sign with the New York Knicks next season. There have also been reports of Durant trying to recruit players to play with him in New York until recently when his manager said he was 100 percent undecided about where he would play next season, which is a very smart move on Durant’s part.

Going to New York could be great for Durant. New York City is a wonderful city and the biggest market in the country. Durant who is already a superstar would be the King of New York. He would play every home game in front of hundreds of celebrities at a sold out Madison Square Garden, but most importantly, he would likely receive more endorsement deals.
Everything could be wonderful for Durant in New York if the Knicks win. The problem is that is easier said than done. The Knicks have not been a serious championship contending team in almost two decades. And let’s not forget that James Dolan is at the helm of the Knicks.
Durant signing with the Knicks alone without any other top free agents could be a disaster even if the team drafts RJ Barrett. Could you imagine Durant averaging 30 points a game for a 40 win Knicks team? How about if the Knicks fail to make the playoffs in Durant’s first three seasons.
The New York media is tough and might be the toughest media in the country. If the Knicks win, they will praise Durant like he is a legend, but if the Knicks fail to reach the Finals; the New York media likely would criticize him every day in a way he has not experienced in his career rather Dolan puts the pieces around him or not.
Rumors are now spreading around the league that Kyrie Irving is more open to reuniting with LeBron James and playing for the Los Angeles Lakers; just as it is being reported that Durant is closely considering signing with the young up-and-coming Los Angeles Clippers.
It seems like Durant and Irving are finally realizing that they should sign with a team who is closer to being a contender instead of gambling on Dolan being able to put a team together.
There are too many teams in the league who could win a championship or make the Finals with Durant next season. So why should he waste his last 3-4 prime years on a rebuilding Knicks team? Durant would be great for the Toronto Raptors if Kawhi Leonard leaves just like he would be great for the Indiana Pacers and the Denver Nuggets.
Those teams could offer Durant something the Knicks can’t and that is a chance to win a championship next season.
