Golden State Warriors: Can Stephen Curry surpass Magic Johnson’s legacy?
Longevity
The cherry on top for Stephen Curry in this debate is longevity. It’s the same argument for Lebron over MJ.
Both MJ and Magic did not play as long as they should have. Magic career was obviously cut short because he contracted the HIV illness. Had he not gotten sick, it is safe to assume he had another few years to play at a very high level.
In Magic’s last season before contracting the illness, he averaged 19.4 points, 12.5 assists, and seven rebounds. He made the all-star team and led his team to a finals before ultimately losing to the Chicago Bulls in 5.
A few more seasons of Magic Johnson would have still competed for titles and racked up major statistics. If he would have gotten another ring, MVP award, a few hundred more assists, or all of the above, the gap between him and Curry would be a lot vaster.
Stephen Curry will show that his run of dominance is not getting cut short. Curry at just 30 years of age, has not shown signs of decline yet. He just led his team in scoring, while having a 7-foot monster in Kevin Durant as his teammate. If Durant leaves this off-season, are we going to see MVP Stephen Curry again?
With Durant gone, Curry can once again stake a claim for “Best Player in the World.” The Warriors are still favorites to come out of the West without Durant. If they do make it to the Finals next year, that would be six straight years making it to the championship.
How LeBron was the “Beast of the East,” Curry will be the “Beast of the West.” A tougher accomplishment, since the Western Conference has more talent and depth.
If Stephen Curry plays another seven seasons with 3-5 of those still in his prime, he would pass Magic Johnson in total points, steals, and free-throws made. He would be able to pass or tie Magic, in all-star selections and All-NBA teams.
With more time, he’ll have more opportunities to compete and win rings, which would make him as great of a winner as anybody that has played the game. The sheer volume of numbers and accolades Stephen Curry can still accumulate will overwhelm Magic’s.
For a generation of people who never saw Magic play, they will ride with Stephen Curry as the greatest. For a generation of people who watched both play, the numbers and longevity of Curry would be too much to detest.
Stephen Curry can only build on his 1st-ballot Hall of Fame resume. If he continues doing what he has done his whole career, he will cement himself as the “Greatest Point Guard Ever.”
