NBA Rumors: The Indiana Pacers are reportedly targeting Ricky Rubio heading into free agency. Will he be a good fit next to Victor Oladipo?

Over the past two seasons, there might’ve not been a more pleasant surprise in the Eastern Conference than the Indiana Pacers. However, if there was one area of weakness for the team, it was at the point guard position.

And with Darren Collison and Cory Joseph both set to hit free agency this summer, the Pacers will need to address the position either via trade, free agency or the draft. Unfortunately, it’s unlikely that the Pacers will find a starting point guard with the 18th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Short of making a move for Mike Conley – though it’s been reported that the Jazz is the leaders in the clubhouse for the all-star point guard – there really isn’t a cheap starting point guard on the open market.

Which means that the Pacers will likely have to look to free agency to find a starting point guard. And, according to a report from The Ringer, their top target could be Ricky Rubio. Rubio likely won’t be returning to Utah, after having a rough two years with the Jazz.

While Rubio may not be the dynamic starting point guard that many teams seek, he is a good defensive player and one of the better passers in the NBA today. What he lacks as a shooter, he more than makes up when it comes to his playmaking.

Rubio, at 28, could also bring a valued veteran presence to the locker room – one that the team would greatly appreciate. Plus, he’d be a great backcourt mate for Victor Oladipo, who hopes to return next season at 100 percent after suffering a late-season injury this past year.

The Indiana Pacers signing Ricky Rubio makes a ton of sense basketball-wise and depending on the money, it might make too much sense for it not to happen.
