Los Angeles Lakers: 5 max players to target in free agency
By Ben Bundy
5. Al Horford
Before anyone points out the obvious, yes, Al Horford isn’t exactly on the same level as the rest of the players on this list. That being said, if Los Angeles does miss out on the players ahead of Horford on this list, then he would be a great addition to the team for a number of reasons. Also, the Lakers could likely overpay for Horford to make sure they convince him to join the team.
The main reason Horford would make a great fit with the Lakers is the fact that he brings an unquestionably positive locker presence and work ethic to any team he’s played on. He would make a great fit on a team looking to make a deep run in the playoffs. Horford has plenty of playoff experience and would thrive on the big stage with Davis and James.
Secondly, Horford would allow Davis to play his preferred position of power forward. Davis has been open about not wanting to be a center in the league, and his game reflects that. He is an elite stretch forward who can play both inside and out of the paint. Horford posses those same skills, to a certain extent, but would accept his role as the post presence and big man on the team.
Horford is by far the oldest player on this list, but his game is still very efficient and dangerous. Last season with the Boston Celtics, Horford averaged 13.6 points, 6.7 rebounds, and 4.2 assists. While the numbers aren’t mind-blowing, they are impressive enough to see why his contribution on the floor would be just as helpful as his contribution in the locker room.
