Los Angeles Lakers: 5 max players to target in free agency
By Ben Bundy
4. Jimmy Butler
The Lakers are set at a couple of positions already, but one they could use an elite player at is the shooting guard spot. Jimmy Butler will likely be the biggest named shooting guard to change teams this free agency, which should make him a top priority for Los Angeles when the free agency starts.
Butler brings a skill set that would benefit Los Angeles on both offense and defense, as well as the ability to play both with and without the ball. Butler is also no stranger to teaming up with other stars. Last season with the Philadelphia 76ers, Butler played alongside Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and Tobias Harris. This would likely help him when it comes to finding his role on a team with James and Davis.
Statistically, Butler is a noticeable step up from Horford. Averaging 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists, he is a player who can score 30-plus points any given night, while also setting up his teammates. Possibly more important than that is his ability to defend other star players on the perimeter. This is something the Lakers will need if they wish to make a championship run.
Butler will garner attention from most teams who can afford this offseason, but if he’s looking to get paid and win a championship, the Lakers may be the best team for him to join. A “Big 3” of James, Davis, and Butler would be nothing to take lightly.
