After a disastrous first 24 hours of NBA Free Agency, there’s no question that the New York Knicks were the big losers

The New York Knicks were definitely the losers on the opening day of NBA free agency, something that many probably couldn’t see coming just a couple months ago.

At the beginning of the year, everyone thought the Knicks were going to sign Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in free agency and possibly draft Zion Williamson with the first overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. With a Big Three of Kyrie, KD, and Zion, the Knicks would be set up for the next decade.

The Knicks believed it too, clearly, as they traded Kristap Porzingis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, and Trey Burkes to the Dallas Mavericks at the NBA Trade Deadline. That deal alone gave the Knicks $74.5 million in cap space and the chance to sign two max players.

Things started to go left when the Knicks did not win the NBA Lottery for the chance to grab Zion Williamson, drafted by the New Orlean Pelicans instead. Also, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving decided not to go to the Knicks, but instead play for the Brooklyn Nets, which is 20 minutes away from New York City.

Durant and Irving took less money for the Nets to acquire DeAndre Jordan, one of the duo’s close friends.

The Knicks now have loads of money and ended up with not one superstar. The only thing left the Knicks can do is sign a bunch of short term contract to second-tier players and try all over again in summer 2021. The Knicks have added Julius Randle, Bobby Portis, Wayne Ellington, Elfird Payton, and Taj Gibson.

If you asked Stephen A Smith – the media’s neighborhood Knicks fan – on how he feels about this, he is not happy, trust me. And neither is any other Knicks for that matter.
