Phoenix passing on PGs in the Draft, only to sign Rubio

Entering the 2019 NBA Draft with the 6th overall pick, there was a decent chance that the Phoenix Suns were going to come away with their possible point guard of the future. However, instead of selecting a prospect like Coby White with the pick, the Suns elected to move down to 11 and take Cameron Johnson, a sharpshooting wing, instead.

After striking out with other free agent point guards, the Suns settled on Ricky Rubio. While that’s not exactly a terrible decision – Rubio is a valued veteran – there was an opportunity for this team to add a young lead guard in the draft, and they decided not to. That, coupled with missing out on a player like D’Angelo Russell in free agency, and it’s hard to see what the Suns’ plan really is.

If you weren’t going to draft a young point guard, that should’ve meant targeting one in free agency. That didn’t happen, which makes their moves this summer odd.
