NBA: The future of the league is in good hands
By Larry Spicer
As the NBA sees somewhat of a changing of the guard, there’s no question that the league is in good hands moving forward
The NBA is a superstar driven league. From Bill Russell to Magic Johnson to Michael Jordan to LeBron James; the Association has never had a shortage of great players. The list can go on and on honestly, however, this isn’t a history lesson but rather a story about the future.
The NBA is changing and growing every day it seems, and this offseason has already brought what feels like the beginning of a new era for professional basketball. The era of the super team could be over, being replaced by dynamic duos which in turn could bring more parody to the game which I believe is a good thing.
There has never been a more exciting time to be a basketball fan than right now. However, it’s more than trades or free-agent acquisitions that makes the future of the NBA so promising. After all, the league is only as strong as its players. News headlines are great don’t get me wrong, but once the sizzle of the “Woj Bomb” fades, it’s the performance on the court that keeps fans in seats or tuning in on TV.

Players like LeBron, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Kawai Leonard have been carrying the torch for a while now and have done an amazing job. The NBA is as strong as it ever was and is only getting stronger because of what they have accomplished which cannot be understated. However, the last few years has produced some pretty amazing drafts which in turn has produced what I believe to be some potential generational talents that basketball fans should be excited for.
The Future
The 2018 NBA Draft produced some pretty exciting prospects with names like Trae Young and Deandre Ayton but there is a phenom out of the Euro-League named Luka Doncic who really took the NBA by storm. Doncic is truly an incredible talent to behold. He isn’t super athletic, however, what makes him amazing is the fact that he is super skilled. His ball handling, passing and shooting makes the Slovenian superstar an absolute joy to watch.
Then, there is Zion Williamson. Even if you only watch basketball periodically, you have probably heard of Zion. The Duke product first took the game by storm through social media while in high school only to rise to an even bigger level on the college stage. Williamson is now the most anticipated prospect in the last 15 years. His mixture of size, athleticism and skill set are unprecedented, making him an absolute marvel on the hardwood.
You still have Anthony Davis who just entering his prime. Davis will quickly become a household name now that he is playing under the bright lights of L.A. Jayson Tatum out of Boston is only scratching the surface of his potential and could become one of the premiere scorers in the NBA. There is Devin Booker of the Suns, Ja Morant in Memphis, R.J. Barrett in New York, and the “Big KAT” in Minnesota.
The talent pool is deep, to say the least.
The pipeline looks strong as well with guys like James Wiseman, Isaiah Todd and RJ Hampton. In fact, there are so many great prospects to name I will need a whole other article just to talk about them. The point is, the NBA is a force to be reckoned with now and for years to come.
Tip-off time will be here before you know it and when it does, tune and find a game. I guarantee there will be a future star that makes you glad you did.
