Little brother is all grown up

Los Angeles has been a Laker town forever. Even during the Lob City Clippers run, it never felt like the Clippers had much staying power in that city. That all changed a few days ago when Kawhi Leonard ended his free agency and signed with the Los Angeles Clippers while the team was working behind the scenes to trade for All-Star wing, Paul George in a historic deal.

There is no big brother and little brother in LA anymore. For the first time in LA, we have two heavyweights who will be fighting for superiority over each other and over the rest of the NBA. LeBron James and Anthony Davis vs. Kawhi Leonard and Paul George. Steve Balmer and Jerry West vs. Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka. Jack Nicholson vs. Clipper Darrell.

I’m getting ahead of myself, but the potential of an all Los Angeles Western Conference Final would be one of the most highly anticipated playoff series in the history of the league, and we could have it a few times in the coming years.

From an on the court perspective, it’s too early to tell who will have the upper hand, but the Clippers are probably the safer bet. Even outside of Kawhi and PG they still managed to retain Montrezl Harrell and reigning 6th man of the year, Lou Williams. The Clippers also have a huge advantage in the front office with Jerry West and with Doc Rivers at the helm they certainly have the advantage at head coach too.

The Lakers may have more upside though. LeBron will get 28-8-8 in his sleep and if he’s engaged and well-rested after a disappointing 2018-2019 season, he could very well still be the best player in the world. Adding a healthy Anthony Davis to the mix makes them the best duo in the league and should give them an advantage over any team they see.

Their ceiling will likely be determined by everyone not named Lebron or Anthony Davis. If Kyle Kuzma takes a step forward and they can find some consistency with their guards, they’ll be as good as anyone.
