New York Knicks: Carmelo Anthony nearly got his retirement tour in NY
Carmelo Anthony nearly got his retirement tour from the New York Knicks
Well, kinda.
According to a recent report from The Athletic’s Shams Charania (subscription required), the New York Knicks were ready to consider bringing back Carmelo Anthony in the event they signed to big-name free agents.
As history remembers, the Knicks – much like has always been the case as of late – struck out in free agency and couldn’t land Kevin Durant and/or Kyrie Irving. Because of that, Melo is no longer an option for the team.

It also points to no retirement tour for Melo, at least from the Knicks. Which is unfortunate. Say what you want about Melo, but there’s no question that he deserved at least one more chance in the NBA, retirement tour or not.
A reunion with the Knicks would probably be the best fit for Melo – short of the Los Angeles Lakers getting desperate to fill out their roster and giving Melo a call later this summer. Melo alongside the likes of Durant and Kyrie would’ve been a great story.
Who knows if it would’ve worked, but it would’ve been a great storyline heading into this season.
And whether Melo deserves it or not is an entirely different story. It’s all a moot point now, considering that we’re getting to that point where there’s a good chance that Melo might not get another shot in the NBA.
We’re almost at the one-year mark of him leaving the Houston Rockets, and he still hasn’t found a new home – whether he has had an actual offer or not, we don’t know at this point.
We were this close the getting a Carmelo Anthony retirement tour. It might end up being one of the biggest “what ifs” in NBA history. History won’t remember Melo in a good light, which is unfortunate.
Carmelo Anthony was a really talented player for many years in this league. Perhaps the biggest knock on him, as a player, was the fact that he was born in the wrong era.
