1. Deandre Ayton, Phoenix Suns

Rarely do we see the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft be overshadowed by other rookies in any given season, but that’s exactly what happened to Deandre Ayton this past season – as, for much of the season, both Luka Doncic and Trae Young stole the spotlight away from the Arizona Wildcat product.

And it wasn’t even because he was bad or considered a bust. Ayton was actually very effective for the Phoenix Suns as he averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds during his rookie campaign even despite being under-utilized on offense.

Assuming he does become more of an offensive focal point this season with the Suns, his stats should take a pretty significant jump (possibly into 20-point territory) and if Phoenix can improve as a team – behind Ayton, Devin Booker, and newly-acquired Ricky Rubio – then the more recognition Ayton will receive for his individual prowess.

All the pieces are in place for Ayton to have a big sophomore season with the Suns. Of course, that will be strongly dependent on his ability to sidestep the much talked about sophomore slump.
