NBA Rumors: It doesn’t sound like the Brooklyn Nets are going to sign Carmelo Anthony as training camps inch closer to opening

NBA Training camps are expected to open next week and Carmelo Anthony still doesn’t have a landing spot. It’s gotten to the point where there’s probably a good chance we won’t see him in an NBA uniform ever again – unless something drastically changes over the next few weeks and months.

One team, however, that had recently gained some traction about possibly giving Melo one last season, the Brooklyn Nets, are said to be moving on from the thought of signing the former perennial all-star.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania (subscription required), the Nets are “highly unlikey” to sign Carmelo Anthony as training camps quickly approaches.

After what we’ve been subject to over the last few months regarding Melo – after his odd departure from the Houston Rockets – it’s not exactly surprising that the Nets are electing to pass on the idea of signing him. Perhaps that sentiment can change over the course of the next few weeks, but at the moment the team is electing to hold off.

Even if the team is somewhat interested, this is probably the best possible move. There’s no real rush to sign Melo right now, and it’s not like there’s this vast market interested for his services. If the Nets feel like they could use a veteran in a couple weeks or even two months into the regular season, Melo will likely still be available.

It’ll be interesting to see if Melo does get another shot in the NBA. For his talent, he probably deserves one. However, his recent exits from the Knicks, Thunder an Rockets are turning off plenty of teams.

There’s no question that Melo could still play in today’s NBA. But there remain big questions about his desire to play a role that could likely have him coming off the bench and, at times, not exactly playing meaningful minutes in a specific rotation.
