According to a report, a contract extension for Jaylen Brown appears unlikely. However, the Boston Celtics shouldn’t panic over it
After losing both Kyrie Irving an Al Horford in free agency this past season, the Boston Celtics need a couple of their young, promising players to step up in 2019-20. Well, if the Celtics are going to make any noise in what many expect to be a wide-open Eastern Conference.
While many expect that player to be Jayson Tatum – along with Kemba Walker, who the team acquired via a sign-and-trade (for Terry Rozier) – another name that should be in line for a big season is Jaylen Brown.
Brown is coming off back-to-back solid seasons and has averaged 13.5 points and nearly five rebounds per game on 47 percent shooting from the field and 37 percent shooting from 3-point range. With an expected jump in opportunities this season, those numbers will have a chance to climb even more.

He’s on the shortlist of young players that could be in line for a breakout season. Because of that, it would’ve been prudent for the Celtics to try and reach a reasonable contract extension before the season. However, that is looking more and more unlikely (per Heavy.com).
That means, assuming a contract extension is not reached, Jaylen Brown will hit the restricted free agency market next summer.
But the Celtics shouldn’t exactly panic due to that fact. Why should Boston invest in a player that, for the most part, doesn’t have a “floor” or “ceiling” yet? Brown hasn’t really been given a fair shake and true opportunity to blossom into the player that he can be.
Until now.
Without the big names on the Celtics, Boston has a huge chip on its shoulder. And the table is set for a new star to arise. Even their biggest name on the roster is somewhat of an afterthought.
After a huge disappointment last season, the Celtics have a lot to prove in 2019-20. And there’s a good chance that Jaylen Brown will be at the head of the charge.
