Los Angeles Lakers: Anthony Davis’ injury could change the team’s ceiling
Anthony Davis could miss time with a thumb injury; we explore whether his injury could change the ceiling for the Los Angeles Lakers
Anthony Davis could end up missing time due to an injury that he suffered during a preseason game over the weekend. While the injury isn’t believed to be serious, it begs the bigger question of whether AD’s recent injury is a sign of what’s to come for the Lakers this season.
AD’s injury history isn’t a secret – it’s a real thing – and it’s the one thing that has left fans skeptical about this Lakers’ team being a real contender this season. It’s probably the only thing that will stand in the way of a deep playoff run, too.
AD suffered his most recent thumb injury in a preseason game in China. The good news is that the MRI came back “clean” and he’s considered “day-to-day.” However, there’s still no guarantee that he’ll be available when the team opens the regular season next week.

Despite the scare, compared to his past injuries, this current injury to AD has to be considered as a sign of relief to Lakers fans. The fact that it’s a fairly mild thumb injury, coupled with the fact that it’s still preseason, has to be considered a win for the Lakers. Had this injury come in the regular season, AD would miss somewhere between 5-10 games, likely.
Instead, AD will have a full week to recover and hope that he can be a go for the team’s opening game of the regular season. And they’ll need all the help they can get on opening night when they face off against Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers.
The hope is that AD can sidestep any big injuries this season. However, if recent history is any indication, there’s a good chance that AD will miss a handful of games this season. The question is, does LeBron James have enough talent around him for the team to win games while Anthony Davis is out?
If the Los Angeles Lakers are going to be successful this season, the answer to that question has to be yes. Although, at least for now, it appears the Lakers have avoided a major AD injury.
