Exploring seven takeaways from the opening week of the 2019-20 NBA season

We’re only a week into the 2019-20 NBA season and there is already plenty to talk about.

So, what we’re going to do today is go through several of the biggest takeaways from the last week of NBA action.

*You can also check out my takeaways from week one by listening to the most recent episode of the Around the Arc podcast (listen below)!

This could be KAT and Wiggins’ year

The T’Wolves are 3-1 to start the season for the first time in five years and they’ve been turning some heads with their play early in the season.

The biggest reason for their fast start has to be Karl-Anthony Towns who has been nothing short of sensational to start the year, putting up an insane stat line of 32/13/5/3/2 on over 50 percent from the field and from 3.

If Minnesota is going to want to remain in the playoff race out west, they’re going to need KAT to continue to perform at an MVP level, but he can’t do it all by himself…

That brings us to Andrew Wiggins.

There was a fair bit of talk about Wiggins leading up to the start of the NBA regular season about how this was kind of a make or break year for the 6th-year forward.

Those that hadn’t already given up on him were saying that this was the year he was going to bounce back and re-establish himself as a rising star, after two sub-par seasons which saw him decline significantly.

And although he’s certainly no all-star (yet), he has shown some promising flashes to start the season, especially in fourth quarters and clutch situations. In the season opener against the Nets, Andrew hit multiple big shots down the stretch and in overtime and just the other night, he went nuts in the 4th against the Heat, hitting three straight threes to seal the game.

It would still be nice to see a little more consistency and assertiveness from Wiggins (maybe getting to the line more as well) but things certainly could have gone worse to start the season.

I’m not ready to label the Timberwolves as legitimate playoff threats yet but if their star duo can continue to play well, they’re going to be no pushover either.
