Derrick Rose’s comeback story has been an inspiring one, as he continues to help fuel the Detroit Pistons

When I was in eighth grade, my class took a field trip to the windy city of Chicago. At the time I was a young NBA fan that was starting to watch games regularly. We had time to kill in downtown Chicago and I came across a Derrick Rose jersey.

The only times I had heard of seen anything about Derrick Rose was from his time at Memphis and his player on NBA Live. (I played these games religiously as a kid). I took the last bit of money I had brought with me and purchased that jersey. (I have always been a jersey collector and I wasn’t going to pass up on this opportunity even if it left me dead broke).

Little did I know at the time he was going to become one of my favorite players I have watched and become the youngest MVP in league history. I also wouldn’t know that his career would nearly be derailed from multiple knee injuries that would plague him for years.

However, the past year and a half, we have seen a new Derrick Rose, a resurgence, a renaissance if you will. He may not be the same explosive player but he has evolved his game to fit him perfectly in today’s NBA.

It all began last season when Rose joined the Minnesota Timberwolves. It was the first offseason where he wasn’t fully rehabbing an injury and could actually work on his game. He signed a one-year deal to be the backup to Jeff Teague. After the lackluster season, he had with the Cleveland Cavaliers the year before, a lot of people thought this would be a make or break season for him.

On one fateful night in October, Rose changed the narrative. The Timberwolves were playing the Jazz that night in their throwback uniforms and time must’ve gone backward as well because Derrick Rose looked like his old MVP self once again He was flying up the court shooting and scoring at will it seemed. He scored 50 points and had the game-saving block for Timberwolves that night.

He fell into tears after the game had finished, surrounded by his teammates who were cheering and congratulating him, showing what all he had been through, the trials, the setbacks, the heartbreak, to get back to that level of ball.

He would finish the season playing in 51 games and with the stat line of 18 points, four assists, and two rebounds per game.

This past summer, he began the next chapter of his career signing a two-year deal with the Detroit Pistons. They brought him in to come off the bench and back up starting point guard Reggie Jackson.

In the 12 games he has played this year, he has been outstanding. He is averaging 16.5 points and five rebounds per game with a Player Efficiency Rating of 21.19. Rose is continuing the stellar play he had last year and taking it to a new level in Detroit.

I personally wonder if they will end up starting him at some point this season if he continues to play at this level and Reggie Jackson, who is currently out with an injury, continues to struggle.

It’s such an inspiring story to see Derrick Rose playing at a high level again. Through all the adversity he has faced with the injuries and the struggles trying to make a comeback, it’s refreshing to see him have a shot to ball out once more.

Hopefully, he can keep up this high level of play and avoid the injury bug. It would be nice to see Rose play some meaningful ball come April. This is truly a Derrick Rose renaissance we are witnessing.
