Handing out the NBA’s regular-season awards at the quarter mark of the 2019-20 NBA season

It’s hard to believe but the NBA regular season is already a quarter of the way over. Most teams have now played around 20 or 21 games and we now have a relatively decent sample size to judge team and player performances.

That is why this week I would like to look at who I believe if the season ended today, who would win each of the major NBA awards. We’ll start with some of the less significant awards like Coach of the Year and work our way up to the big one… MVP.

With that said let’s get started.

Coach of the Year: Frank Vogel, Los Angeles Lakers

Through twentyish games of the season, some teams have looked incredible and others… less incredible. One team that has been playing amazing, and certainly better than anyone expected, at least at first, is that of the Los Angeles Lakers.

That is why I believe so far, Frank Vogel is deserving of the Coach of the Year award. The Lakers are currently the best team in the NBA at 18-3 and have had no signs of slowing down.

Coming into the season a lot of people pegged that Lakers as a team that might start slow due them trying to figure out how to all fit together. But that has been far from the case. Frank Vogel has LeBron, AD, and company playing exceptionally well as a team.

I think a lot of people assumed the Lakers would be a very top-heavy team and would be struggling to find role players on the buy-out market. However, I think their supporting cast has looked solid to this point. Contributions from Dwight Howard, Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee, Danny Green, and KCP have been encouraging. And they haven’t got much out of Kyle Kuzma to this point.

Frank Vogel is a deserving coach of the year candidate one-quarter of the way through the season, and I won’t be surprised if he is in the running for the award come April.

Other candidates: Nick Nurse, Mike Budenholzer, Brad Stevens
