Davis Bertans has been a delight to watch
Davis Bertans is one of the 10 or so best shooters in the NBA. Now that he is away from San Antonio he has the license to fire away from deep no matter the distance, angle, or how contested the shot is. He flies around screens like the forward version of J.J. Redick. The Wizards have an important decision to make with him at the trade deadline and into the offseason.
With the way he has been playing (offensively), and with how barren the 2020 summer free-agent class is looking, it is not unrealistic to think that someone will offer him a contract for at least $14 million per season. And if Bertans keeps up this level of flame-throwing from 3, the Wizards may even be able to fetch a first-round pick for him at the deadline (while having to take on some bad salary perhaps).
This leaves the Wizards with an important question to ask themselves: Do they deal him in February or keep him through the end of the season? The answer to this depends on a variety of factors: what teams are offering at the deadline, what they believe his market value will be in free agency, the degree to which they believe he can be part of the next core, and playoff positioning for this season (Eastern Conference, baby!).
It’s a tough call, but I would lean towards trading him because I do not see as a starter on a good playoff team. It could truly go either way though, and at age 27, he is not too old where he does not fit around the current group. Right now we can just enjoy the Davis Bertans experience and think about these decisions later.
