NBA: Looking back at 8 of the best/worst offseason moves from the summer
The Wizards trading for Davis Bertans
Not a big name by any stretch, but the former Spur has thrived playing alongside Bradley Beal and company. In San Antonio, he was forced to back up LaMarcus Alridge and play under Popovich’s system but now the only competition he has at the four spot is rookie, Rui Hachimura, and second-year player, Moritz Wagner.
Going from six field goals attempts in 21.5 minutes to 10 field goal attempts within a span of 28 minutes can obviously help, but you still have to capitalize on the opportunity and Bertans has done just that.
Standing at 6-foot-10, Bertans has showcased this season that he is more than just a three-point shooter. At times, he can put the ball on the floor and since he’s so tall and has a quick release, he can practically shoot it over most of his opponents with immense ease.
To think that the Spurs practically gave him up for nothing with the intention of signing Marcus Morris can certainly explain Popvich’s prolonged frustration.
