Hussle Like Russell
Russell Westbrook played approximately 415 regular-season games inside the Peake during his Thunder tenure. Some performances were great, while others should probably be forgotten. He broke many records or at least tied them on his once home court. But, on the evening of April 2, 2019, Westbrook did something truly remarkable.
Just days after, LA icon and rapper Nipsey Hussle was slain in his hometown, Russell went against their hometown Lakers recording 20 points, dishing 21 assists, and pulling down 20 rebounds. It was only the second 20-20-20 stat line in NBA history.
Comedian, host, and philanthropist Demetrius “Juice” Deason pegged this achievement as his top Russ moment because he did it for their friend Nipsey. As a side note, Juice will be presenting the Why Not Comedy show on Friday, January 10, in Oklahoma City at Tower Theater. The event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm CST, followed by an after-party.
Jeremy S describes what made Russ’ stellar performance on Nipsey night so special to him:
“I know it was because of Nipsey, but I liked it for different reasons. I appreciate it because of what it represents as far as Westbrook’s abilities. But, for him to actually go out and get that stat line is incredible. It highlights his unique talent to impact the game through different avenues. I hadn’t seen anything like it before.”
The connection between Westbrook’s boxscore and Nipsey Hussle is this; the rapper was a former member of the Rollin’ 60’s Crips, a notorious street gang in Los Angels.
Some will remember Westbrook waving Donovan off to remain in the game and coral his 20th rebound, but what many will remember is Westbrook uniquely honoring his fallen friend in a fashion only the Brodie himself could.
