It was a historic week in the NBA, milestones were reached, eye-popping statistics were recorded, and Zion Williamson made his anticipated debut
The NBA is always exciting. With that said, some weeks provide better content than others, this week falls into the former category. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 draft Zion Williamson finally made his long-awaited NBA debut. Check out some of the best, posts, takes, and highlights from Zion’s big night below. Starting out with some pregame hype:
It’s Zion time
We went to New Orleans to see how hyped it is for Zion's debut. And already, a strong city is feeling a little bit stronger: pic.twitter.com/eb0Rkot64Z

This will be cool
If you think Zion is good now, wait until they develop the technology to make robots not need to charge

Pregame prediction
My Prediction on Zion tonight!!! Think he will have a solid performance with a cool 12 points and 8-10 rebounds in about 25 minutes of action!

Premature statement
This Zion debut...bit of a dud.

Stats do not always tell the full story
And? What’s the point? Who cares? https://t.co/QZatZRgP5a
— Shane Young (@YoungNBA) January 23, 2020
Shane Young makes an excellent point here. Both players play two different positions, and not every player needs to shoot threes to be effective. Case in point, Russell Westbrook is a better player when he does not shoot threes, but more on that later.
Overreaction
If Zion can't play 5 consecutive minutes, I have to wonder if he should even be out there. There is no way he can catch a rhythm that way. Once he gets going, he's going to the bench. This doesn't seem like the smartest plan.
— Mo Dakhil (@MoDakhil_NBA) January 23, 2020
Reality
ESPN Kinda Missed the Mark
NBA: We want Zion on all the national TV games!
— Ben Taylor (@ElGee35) January 23, 2020
ESPN: You HAVE to watch Zion's debut this Wednesday night!!
ESPN's broadcasters: Calm down. He's fat.
*This is paraphrasing, these are not the exact comments used on ESPN during the Pelicans broadcast.

Zion legitimately flipped the debut narrative from “he’s rusty but excited to see him further down the road” to “holy shit HE’S HERE” in one minute.

More From Klopfer
First quarter Zion impression: its good that he missed half the year and NOLA could get a rhythm without him and not rely on him too much
— Brady Klopfer (@BradyKlopferNBA) January 23, 2020
Second quarter Zion impression: wyd NOLA give him the damn ball
Before moving on from Zion’s debut, here’s the scoop on Williamson; he played the first NBA game of his career, after not playing competitive basketball for literally months. This one game will not determine whether he is a star or a bust. In fact, one full season of basketball can not do that, before declaring his a future Hall-of-Famer or a player who will struggle to get a second contract, let’s see how the rest of the season pans out for the rookie.
Seems like a fair trade
The Zion Effect
The @NBA's social-media content featuring Zion Williamson was viewed more than 25 million times in the 24 hours following his pro debut, according to the NBA. All eyes are on the 19-year-old. His second NBA game starts in 30 minutes. pic.twitter.com/DvydbyuTFa

I would've said get Ivica Zubac in this game more, but it might be too late now. No real excuse for him playing just 15 minutes in tonight's game and considering how well he was playing. #Clippers

More NSFWL, but this idea is very fun
The Bulls should sign Noah before the Mavs do, for several reasons.
— Mark K (@mkhoops) January 22, 2020
1. So we don't have to watch both Kornet and Felicio play
2. End his career where it started
3. He would not stand for Boylen's shit and would let the world know
Perhaps Joakim Noah could still be a serviceable center
Sources: The Mavs have touched base with Joakim Noah as they search for center depth in the wake of Dwight Powell's season-ending injury. Dallas has concerns about Noah's health and is considering several other options, including G League and overseas players.

— Andrew Schlecht (@AndrewKSchlecht) January 23, 2020
This whole season has felt that way with the way Billy has coached and how the team responds to adversity
I also owe the Thunder an apology
I owe the @okcthunder an apology. I was led to believe the preseason narrative (aka media, aka casual fans, aka haters) that this team wouldn’t be SHIT. I was this close, THIS CLOSE 👌🏼 to believing it. For that I am truly sorry. This team is actually EVERYTHING.

— Andrew Schlecht (@AndrewKSchlecht) January 23, 2020
That’s insane
Fun stat from the Thunder’s win in Orlando; they pulled down zero offensive rebounds. This was the First time that has occurred in franchise history, and only the third instance this has occurred in league history since the NBA began tracking offensive rebounds.

📅 Fourteen years ago today, the @Lakers Kobe Bryant scored 81 points in a win over the Raptors. Bryant shot 28-46 on FG (7-13 on 3P) and 18-20 on FT. It's still the second-highest single-game point total in NBA history, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point performance.

Steller Shaivonte
One of the most overlooked things from yesterday's crazy come-back victory against the Rockets: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander never goes outside of who he is. Even though it was a low scoring night, he was still efficient, took what the defense gave him, and contributed in other ways.

Is Enes Kanter bad at defense? The answer is a definitive yes. But, guess what a lot of players are, some superstars are bad at defense. Kanter should not be penalized for it, because his offensive prowess helps win ball-games, just ask the Portland Trail Blazers if they miss Kanter.

New tenants in my apartment. Walked near their place and heard the dulcet tones of Kevin Harlan booming through the hallway. So yeah. Those of you who say ratings are down. Take that for data.

Mavs have made 20+ 3s in a game six times this season. They did it three times in franchise history before this season.

The big deal? He’s shooting 7 more times a game and averaging 9ppg more.
Most young players see an increase in numbers but decrease in efficiency. Shai has increased stats and stayed efficient.
Sports Radio Rocks!
So cool being back in Oklahoma and listening to 98.1 The Sports Animal. I wanna call in and give the answer to the question this morning. Two @okcthunder players that were drafted by the Hawks. It’s sooo easy.

NSFWL and a little pettiness from Draymond
Draymond Green when asked what his all-star criteria would be: “The shit that matters in this league don’t really matter to me. It’s all about how to make the game better for the offensive player, which is probably the reason the ratings probably suck.” pic.twitter.com/pXwc0X8YkJ

Watching a player every night can sway an opinion
The irony here is that almost every OKC fan couldn’t stand CP3, continued to bash him in comparison to Russ, and now all of sudden love him to death. https://t.co/Oq3vwHxtkO

The Westbrook Effect
Westbrook converting the fanbase of his absolute #1 haters for the last 3 years into loving him like this is hilarious and I knew it was gonna happen since the trade LMFAO
— 🦍 (@SlimeWeeper) January 25, 2020
Russ is rolling
Russell Westbrook: season-high 45 points in win over Timberwolves. James Harden: season-low 12 points.
— Tim MacMahon (@espn_macmahon) January 25, 2020
Those are continuations of recent trends, but I wouldn’t jump to conclusion that Westbrook’s scoring has anything to do with Harden’s slump. Harden looks tired. DNP-rest soon?
If this continues the Rockets will be scary in the playoffs
Russell Westbrook's 45 points were the most scored by a guard without attempting a 3 since Dwyane Wade had 48 against the Magic in December, 2007.
— Jonathan Feigen (@Jonathan_Feigen) January 25, 2020
MVP’s doing what MVP’s do
Little More context on Russ
Once again, Russell Westbrook did not attempt a 3-pointer during the game. He has now taken one 3-point attempt over the past 4 games.
— Alykhan Bijani (@Rockets_Insider) January 25, 2020
Westbrook: 45 points (16-27 shooting, 13-13 FTs), 10 assists. #Rockets https://t.co/XyOii6JyJw

Does Jordan get away with talking about players on other teams because he's Jordan, or because it's not tampering since everyone knows that no star is ever going to sign in Charlotte?
— Brady Klopfer (@BradyKlopferNBA) January 24, 2020
The Grizzlies should not allow Iggy to play at this point
I still hate the fact that we traded Iggy to the Grizzlies, but now that they're officially competitive this year, it's really becoming shitty for him not to play. It's not like he didn't sign a wildly lucrative contract for a role player to begin with

Favorite part about attending the Thunder-Hawks game tonight... The OKC fans reaction when Vince Carter entered the game. Then when he scored. Then when he exited. Was really cool.

Typical Kawhi
Kawhi says that he found out about his triple double from Ty Lue. When asked what he would do with the game ball:
— Shane Young (@YoungNBA) January 25, 2020
“I don’t know, probably take it home. Might shoot with it.”
It’s okay to care about statistics
Bam Adebayo on Kawhi's triple double: "He definitely showed that he wanted that game. We all felt it. You can feel that type of energy."

Stronger Defense

NBA GMs messed up. He’s not some hidden gem. I think sometimes people get too focused on shooting and forget about what makes other players great.
PLAYOFFS
Here’s how much cushion OKC has over Memphis and San Antonio:
— Brandon Rahbar (@BrandonRahbar) January 25, 2020
The Thunder could lose their next 5 games, and the Grizzlies and Spurs could both win their next 5 games, and OKC would still be ahead of them both for the 7 seed.

We’ve all kinda agreed to give Coach of the Year to whoever coaches the team that outperformed our expectations the most.
— Fred Katz (@FredKatz) January 25, 2020
But why should someone like Mike Budenholzer, who’s clearly done another great job this year, not be in the running just bc he was also great last year?

Trade Threads are fun
In 2015, OKC acquired a 2019 2nd rounder from DET in the trade that brought Kanter and Singler to the Thunder.
— Jon Hamm (@JonMHamm) January 25, 2020
That pick later went to BOS to offload Perry Jones. Boston later traded the pick BACK to DET. The Pistons traded it *again* to Dallas.
That pick became Isaiah Roby.

The Thunder have captured the Mayor’s attention
Thunder started 5-10 & have gone 22-9 since. That second stretch - consistent & lengthy - represents a 71% winning percentage. That percentage over a season would give you the 3rd-best record in the NBA. I think it’s time to declare that something special is happening in OKC. https://t.co/41tVwz7E9u

This week’s high note came courtesy of CJ McCollum. Everyone is going through something, regardless of your current struggle things can always improve. This statement could not be more accurate than right now.
Let’s make it through this week together, and celebrate a legend next Sunday!
