One week ago Kobe Bryant and eight others perished in a helicopter crash. Today, Sir Charles in Charge reflects on the life of Kobe
I never met him, but he was in my living room many nights. I never saw him play in person, but I watched him play live on countless occasions. He was not my favorite player, but he was one of the biggest reasons I love the game.
One week ago today, the world lost a legend. But, Kobe Bryant was oh so much more than an outstanding athlete.
Bryant was an entrepreneur, a philanthropist, a business person, a producer, a teammate, a friend, a mentor, a son, a brother, a husband, and, most importantly, a father. Bryant’s life was not the only one lost. His 13-year-old daughter Gianna Bryant, along with seven other passengers and the helicopter pilot also perished in a truly tragic accident. Goodbye Kobe. Rest in paradise Black Mamba.
Where were you when
Wow.
— Damian Lillard (@Dame_Lillard) January 26, 2020
There are moments that you never forget where you were when they happened, these are known as where were you when moments. Kobe’s death falls into that category. I was sitting on my couch, saw the above tweet from Lillard, thought he got traded, then I saw the tragic motive behind this tweet trending on Twitter.

Kobe was a legend on the court and just getting started in what would have been just as meaningful a second act. To lose Gianna is even more heartbreaking to us as parents. Michelle and I send love and prayers to Vanessa and the entire Bryant family on an unthinkable day.

Wise perspective from Mr. Oh Me, Oh My
Thoughts are with Kobe’s family in light of this tragic loss. His parents, Joe and Pam were close friends back in early Clipper years in San Diego. I held 1 year old Kobe on my lap in 1979. His life transended sport. It hardly seems real.
— Ralph Lawler (@Ohmeomy) January 26, 2020
Bryant was definitely a force
RIP Kobe Bryant. I cannot believe I just typed those words. Just impossible to comprehend. He was becoming as big a force in his second career as he was on the court. God bless his wife and children.

It’s Important to laugh
A lot of these tributes mention Kobe Bryant’s great sense of humor. I hope this video brings a smile to your face on a devastating day, and reminds us of the many layers and many laughs of one of the greatest athletes of all time.

Searching for an escape
In moments of tragedy, I’ll often go to baseball or basketball just to take my minds off things. Sports are a good getaway for me. I’m sure a lot of people are like that. It’s a really weird vibe when sitting at this game feels like the exact opposite of that.
