Summary: The Miami Heat does a great job at improving their team by filling their needs without sacrificing their ability to sign a MAX free agent in 2021 even after extending Bam Adebayo. Nemanja Bjelica provides some shooting at power forward with Adebayo next to him to cover some of his defensive shortcomings. Paul Millsap provides a tough veteran presence that should align well with Jimmy Butler and Andre Iguodala in setting an example for the Heat’s young guys.
If the 2019-20 season is any indication, the Heat does not have a ton of moves to make to keep atop the Eastern Conference, and adding veteran depth at forward should go a long way in maintaining their contender status. The Heat have not hidden their intention to have MAX cap space in 2021 and will be able to create it without losing Jimmy Butler or Bam Adebayo which should make them an attractive free-agent destination.
The 2020 Free Agent class is very limited in top tier options so the gap between Danilo Gallinari for example versus Bjelica and Millsap isn’t worth sacrificing future cap flexibility for.
