Boston Celtics

Roster

Head coach: Brad Stevens

2019-20 NBA season results:

  • Lost in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Milwaukee Bucks

Who they re-signed:

  • N/A

Who they signed in FA:

  • Cheick Diallo signed to a one-year league minimum contract

Trades they made:

  • Vincent Poirier and 2021 Celtics second-round draft pick for future Hawks top 55 protected second-round draft pick
  • 11th overall draft pick and 25th overall draft pick to the New York Knicks for 8th overall draft pick

Who they drafted:

  • Drafted Onyeka Okongwu, Zeke Nnaji, Wendell Moore Jr.

Other moves:

  • Jayson Tatum extended to a max contract

Summary: The Boston Celtics start the offseason by trading up for Onyeka Okongwu who is just what the doctor ordered for them. Okongwu provides a mature locker room presence and defensive tenacity to anchor their depth everywhere else. Unfortunately, due to their luxury tax bill, they needed to let Kanter go but returning a good majority of their roster and swapping Kanter for Okongwu, and Diallo fills them out more completely.

Their other late first-round pick Zeke Nnaji just adds to their overall depth in the frontcourt with an already strong wing rotation and Kemba Walker holding down the point guard spot with Marcus Smart. Extending Jayson Tatum is an obvious move and they could go into 2020-21 as possibly the top team in the Eastern Conference if their season breaks right.

The Celtics mostly continue to gel rather than opt to shake up the roster as they have in some recent offseasons. After the whole Kyrie Irving saga, the Anthony Davis trade rumors and losing Al Horford bringing everyone back should be a breath of fresh air for the team.
