The NBA will reportedly begin reopening some practice facilities on May 1 as the 2019-20 season continues to sit in a hiatus.
Practice makes perfect, as they say. But there’s convolution in perfecting your craft when gym accessibility is no longer in service. With all team facilities closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many players have been left with virtually nowhere to train.
The pandemic has also prompted several questions regarding professional sports. Most specifically, when, or if, will the NBA be able to resume the 2019-20 season? It’s been in a hiatus since March 11 and NBA commissioner Adam Silver hasn’t given any potential timeline on when/if or how it will return.
According to ESPN, the NBA is allowing some team practice facilities to open May 1.

"The NBA is reopening team practice facilities beginning on Friday for players in states and municipalities that are loosening stay-at-home restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN.…Players can return to team facilities in states such as Georgia for voluntary individual workouts as soon as next week, which allows for NBA organizations to start allowing players to return to training in a professional, safe environment."
Before we get ahead of ourselves here, Woj did also say that the opening of some practice facilities does not have anything to do with the possibility of resurrecting the season. With that said, you can’t help but feel a bit more encouraging about the possibility of it.
While this is certainly a big first step for the NBA, we must remember that Silver and the league will continue to ensure the safety of its players and staff. At the end of the day, that will be the No. 1 priority when it’s time for Silver to make a decision on the 2019-20 season.
Time will tell if this ends up being a great decision or not and if this will open the door for possibly starting the season back up at some point over the next couple of months.
