Portland Trail Blazers: 3 big questions after missing the playoffs in 2019-20
Has their dynamic duo peaked?
The biggest question that the Blazers will have to answer this summer is whether or not this core together has run its course. Has the dynamic duo of Lillard and McCollum peaked? At the very least, you can make the case that going from making the Western Conference Finals to missing the playoffs completely would suggest that possibility.
This is not to say that Lillard and McCollum are past their prime because they’re not. Instead, this is to say that together they have played their best basketball as a unit. Or that they aren’t going to be able to top what they’ve already accomplished.
If I told you a few years ago that the duo of Lillard and McCollum would develop to carry the Blazers to the Western Conference Finals, I’m sure many fans would’ve signed up for that. However, I’m not sure this is a duo, alone, that can win an NBA Championship. And there’s nothing wrong with that.
The Blazers need to decide if this duo is good enough to deliver a championship. There’s a large gap between the Lakers/Clippers and the Blazers. There’s no denying that. Is it time for Portland to shake their roster up? And if so, does that mean breaking up their dynamic duo? It’s a fair question to ask.
