NBA Rumors: The league has pushed back the Draft Lottery and Combine and the league is reportedly eyeing a December start for the 2020-21 season

We may be no closer to an actual set date to resume the 2019-20 NBA season, but there seem to be some encouraging signs. First things first, the NBA announced some important offseason housekeeping duties that needed to be set.

The NBA announced that the Draft Lottery and Combine would both be pushed back indefinitely. They were both scheduled to take place in May before the hiatus was implemented in early-March. It’s unknown when they will now take place, however, if the 2019-20 NBA season does resume you’d expect the draft festivities to take place no early than August.

Interestingly, in light of keeping the option open of simply not canceling the 2019-20 season entirely, reports have surfaced that some owners and team/league executives are in support of pushing the start of next season into December.

That’s one of the potential changes in the NBA calendar that has been widely discussed over the last few weeks.

"[via ESPN]As ownership support grows for the idea, commissioner Adam Silver and the NBA board of governors continued discussions Friday about delaying the start of the 2020-21 season until December, sources told ESPN.Amid the coronavirus pandemic, the NBA’s thinking and planning has progressed on the idea independent of whether the 2019-20 season resumes and is completed, sources said."

Of note, as Adrian Wojnarowski notes in the report, the start of the NBA season would occur before Christmas and would likely extend into July and/or August. This would completely throw a huge wrench in what has been the status quo in the NBA and add a breath of fresh air to the league altogether.

Though, it likely won’t come without resistance. Especially if the league moves to make the 2020-21 NBA calendar the norm moving forward.

At this point, even if the 2019-20 NBA season isn’t able to be completed at some point during the summer, there’s no question that the next season (2020-21) will be delayed in some form of fashion. Change is coming to the NBA calendar. The question is, will it be a drastic one or will the NBA try to keep as much normalcy as possible?

From what we know about Adam Silver, it’s that he isn’t afraid of setting precedent. He’s a fearless leader that isn’t afraid to change the status quo. In a time such as this one, that’s all you want from a leader. The next few weeks should be interesting.
