NBA Rumors: 3 teams – thus far – are expected to open practice facilities
NBA Rumors: According to a report, three teams, thus far, are preparing to open the doors to their practice facilities later this week.
Since it was reported that the NBA was going to allow practice facilities to be opened – with restrictions – in states in which stay-at-home orders are slowly being eased, there was, predictably, some push back.
However, USA Today is reporting that three teams, for now, are expected to take the initiative and open the doors to their practice facilities for their players.
"Even though the NBA targeted Friday for teams to open their practice facilities to a limited number of players at a time, just a few teams – the Houston Rockets, Portland Trail Blazers, and Denver Nuggets and maybe another team or two – plan to make their facility available on that day."

While this is not necessarily a “first step” in the NBA resuming the 2019-20 season, it could be viewed as a positive sign. At the very least, it will give some players some sense of normalcy as we inch closer to the two-month mark of the NBA hiatus.
What happens next is what will be most interesting. If there are no setbacks over the next week or so, there could be another announcement. Right now, though, all indications point to it being too early to tell if the season will resume or not.
The hope is that the NBA will at least play some sort of postseason and doing so will likely push the start of the 2020-21 season back. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has already said that it’s something the league could live with. And he reportedly has backing from owners and league executives.
The NBA was originally going to allow teams to begin to open their practice facilities last Friday (May 1), but elected to push it back one week to this Friday (May 8).
Predictably, there are still plenty of teams that will hold off. The safety of the players and team staff are what should be important here. Even with restrictions and social distancing in place, many teams may not feel they’re ready to open up facilities just yet.
The next few weeks will be big for the NBA. As more states begin to ease back restrictions, it’ll be interesting to see how the league reacts.
