NBA Rumors: League targeting July 31 restart
There might still be plenty that needs to be sorted out in terms of logistics, but NBA commissioner Adam Silver reportedly has a date that he is targeting, along with the league’s owners, to restart the 2019-20 season.
July 31.
That’s the target date that has emerged after meeting between Silver and the Board of Governors. This was first reported by The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
While July 31 is still roughly two months away, this is certainly a positive development. After a couple of weeks of increasingly positive news, a target date has now been set. It should be stated that nothing is set in stone and that date could perhaps change depending on a myriad of outside factors.
The league still needs to decide how it’s going to conduct the restart and if every team is going to be called back, if not how many will, and how the playoffs will look once they begin. There’s a growing belief that when the league does return, every game will take place in a safety bubble that will likely be in Orlando – on Walt Disney World property.
Even though that has yet been finalized and agreed upon, that’s looking more and more like the best and most likely scenario at this point.
There have been plenty of ideas that have been tossed around about how the NBA will look when it returns, but the only certainty revolves around the safety bubble and the limited amount that will be allowed in – apart from players, coaches, and team personnel.
While this latest piece of news isn’t exactly a release on the official return of the NBA, a target date is an important step. This makes an NBA return, at the very least, plausible – something that hadn’t been so since the hiatus was implemented.
There are still plenty of corresponding steps and protocols that need to be taken and put in place, but this is certainly enough good news to carry NBA fans into the weekend. Basketball might be on the horizon again. That is great news.
