New York Knicks: Head coaching job is Tom Thibodeau’s to lose
It sounds like Tom Thibodeau will be hired by the New York Knicks
One of the New York Knicks‘ first goals of the offseason will consist of finding a new head coach. According to recent reports, the early candidates include Kenny Atkinson, current interim coach Mike Miller, and heavy favorite Tom Thibodeau.
As we inch closer to the offseason (whenever that will occur), it’s sounding more and more like it won’t be a full-scale coaching search. In fact, according to the New York Daily News, the job is Thibodeau’s to lose.
The report says that both sides are so confident that this will eventually come to fruition that Thibs is already beginning to make calls in an attempt to begin to assemble a staff.

This isn’t a surprising report by any means and falls in line with what’s already been reported. Even though Thibs has a reputation that follows him, that isn’t exactly a gold standard for coaches, you can’t deny that he’s experienced success in the NBA. That, along with the big name that he carries (he has connections all over the league and has an extensive coaching tree), makes him an attractive coaching candidate.
Especially for the Knicks.
The big question, however, for the team is whether or not this would be a good hire for this current roster and where the vision of this franchise is heading. New York doesn’t need a coach that is coming in to win right away. Perhaps that’s something fans want to hear, that simply isn’t the case.
The Knicks aren’t in a place where they’re going to be a quick fix. This is a team that is in the midst of a slow rebuild and short of landing a big-name free agent over the next two offseasons, New York will need to continue to build from the ground up.
Make no mistake, the Knicks aren’t in as terrible of a spot as they’ve been in the past. There’s a path back to relevance in New York for the Knicks. But it’s likely one that will take time.
With that said, the New York Knicks better be sold on Tom Thibodeau. This can’t be another mistake that will set the franchise back another 3-5 years.
