NBA Free Agency: Harry Giles could benefit from a fresh start

With the league’s adjusted schedule, NBA Free Agency is set to start October 15. Like is always the case, there will be plenty of intriguing targets. One potential steal of the offseason could be Harry Giles.

Giles has had a tough go so far in his career. Touted as one of the best basketball prospects in the country in high school in 2016, a series of ACL and knee injuries have derailed his career. Selected 20th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2017 NBA Draft, the plan was to get Giles healthy and then to allow him to grow as a player.

That simply hasn’t played out as well as the Sacramento Kings had hoped.

Add in the fact that the Kings already have Marvin Bagley and Richaun Holmes on the roster too, and it’s understandable that the team is ready to move on from Giles. After Sacramento declined his team option, Giles is projected to be an unrestricted free agent during the 2020 offseason.

Harry Giles has shown promise though, especially this season filling in the absence of other big men. He may never be a superstar, he might not be the go-to No. 1 option or a great 3-dimensional scorer but there is a pathway to his success.

In the right system, Giles can be a dynamic do-it-all big who might not always need to be relied upon for a lot of minutes. While his statistics might not show it, he can be efficient as a cutter, screener, and a post distributor for an offense. All that with a smooth mid-range shot that features a high release, Giles can be excellent in pick-and-pop situations.

Keep in mind, Giles is still young. He still needs some refinement in his screen technique. He has excellent defensive potential but he needs to improve his consistency on that end of the court as this season was a mixed bag. With the proper surroundings and medical staff though, Giles can be a long-term rotation big.

Here are four teams that could look to sign Harry Giles and help him reach his potential.
