Harry Giles’ potential NBA free agency landing spot No. 4: Phoenix Suns

Monty Williams has done a great job early in his tenure with the Phoenix Suns, and part of that is coming from his, and general manager James Jones’ philosophy on getting smart players in there system. I would qualify Harry Giles as a smart player, one that would be an excellent rotation big in Phoenix.

Though Phoenix already has their center of the future in Deandre Ayton, Giles would still fit as a top bench option, or even in situations trying him at power forward. What his fit really comes down to is, fitting the system and defensive potential.

The 0.5 system”  Monty Williams runs is designed so that players receive a pass and then determine whether they want to shoot, pass, or drive within a half-second.

In that system, Giles would be able to make quick passes to any of the frequent cutters Phoenix uses, shoot from his sweet spot in the middle, or drive-in for easy dunks.

In terms of defense, he’ll bring potential versatility. With some growth, Giles could guard anyone on the frontcourt. In certain times he may even be more valuable to fill in roaming the paint for Ayton. Coach Williams has shown that he wants to be a mentor to players in Phoenix and Giles could be a perfect player for him.

Phoenix is also a location with a great medical staff, look at how they revolutionized sports medicine during the Steve Nash era, Nash loved being their so much in part because they were able to track and consistently manage his chronic back problem. That would bode well for Harry Giles’ knees in the future.
