Detroit Pistons road to redemption step 1: Tear it down

Whoever comes into the Pistons situation needs to come with a clear vision of what they want for the team. They need to know the type of culture and play-style they want the new era to be defined by.

In the past, the Pistons culture was defined by hard-work, attitude, and defense. The entirety of their championship rosters was built in that philosophy. Look at Ben Wallace, and Bill Laimbeer for example, they exemplified the team’s culture.

Every player across both those eras (with a few exceptions) played to the Pistons image. That is why it is so crucial that the new front office comes in with a vision and then gets rid of every player that does not fit into it.

The smart move would be to look for trades for these players that would give the team back assets to continue to build towards their image. If trades do not work then let these players that don’t fit go in free agency.

It is impossible to build a champion without the culture and right fits. That is why the Pistons moved on from Adrian Dantley to Mark Aguirre during their championship run, because as great as Dantley was he didn’t fit the team the way that Aguirre did it’s that simple.
