Detroit Pistons road to redemption step 4: Find the star

To be a true title contender, you need to have a star on the roster. The player that becomes the center of gravity, the guy the personifies what the team is about. If this new Pistons regime wants to be successful (and if they want to get people in the seats), they’ll need to find a star.

Stars can be elite guards, they could be amazing big-men but what the Pistons should look for in this modern NBA is the elite two-way forward that can create their own shot. Look at the last three Finals MVPs: LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard. The best players in the NBA are the superstar forwards.

Beyond the current winners, the best young players in the NBA fall into this category as well. Look at Boston with two young wings Jaylen Brown, and Jayson Tatum. The New Orleans Pelicans have wings Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram too. Building a team is easier with the elite wing.

It might be difficult to find one in this year’s draft, but if the team can grow their foundation in the 2020 draft, next year’s draft looks to be littered with superstar potential wings. The Pistons with that type of player go from no identity to an instant identity to build on.
