How the AD trade changed the Los Angeles Lakers: Gives LA a true direction for the future
Perhaps you may be reading this and say that of course, the Lakers have a direction, they have LeBron James. But there’s no guarantee that LeBron will be in the fold long-term for the Lakers. LeBron can opt-out after the 2020-21 season, so that means there’s a real chance that he’ll only be a Laker for only one more season.
In that event, the Lakers will return back to square one. That’s where the Anthony Davis trade changed things for the franchise. Should AD re-sign long-term with the team, either this offseason or next, he could give the franchise a player to build around and hope for the future even when LeBron elects to move on.
Assuming Davis wants to be a member of the Lakers long-term, he could be the new franchise player for an organization that has a long list of historical basketball figures.
There’s no question that the Los Angeles Lakers are in a much better place one year after acquiring Anthony Davis. It’s a move that will forever be remembered, especially if it pays off with a 17th NBA Championship.
