NBA Rumors: Is another lockout on the horizon?

As concerns continue to grow around the NBA actually moving forward with their current play to return to action July 30, there are numerous future repercussions around what the future of the league will/could look like if in fact the 2019-20 season doesn’t resume and is canceled altogether.

"[via Bleacher Report]“I think there’s going to be a renegotiation of the CBA, there will be a lockout [in 2020-21] and you’re going to see something similar to what’s happening right now in baseball,” a Western Conference coach told Tim Bontemps of ESPN. “You’ll see a very different NBA going forward if, in fact, we don’t play.”"

The NBA has already approved a plan to return to action, which includes 22 teams, an eight-game seeding schedule, a potential play-in playoff tournament, and then the traditional seven-game series playoffs.

The NBA is in a difficult situation

However, as of late, there are many players that have concerns about whether returning to action in an Orlando bubble is the best course of action for this current climate. And it’s not just the safety issues surrounding a global pandemic.

There’s civil unrest in this country and many players believe it might not provide the best optics should the NBA return to action, taking attention away to a much more important time in this country. Kyrie Irving led a conference call with roughly 100 players (from both the NBA and WNBA), giving voice to players that perhaps hadn’t had the opportunity to share their beliefs, opinions, and/or concerns about the current plan to return to action.

There are so many levels and this is far from a “yes or no” decision. Plus, then there are the potential future issues that could arise if the NBA players elect not to resume the season. As stated above, would that bring about a lockout with having to rip up the old CBA and agree on a new one?

This is not only an important moment in America and the world but one for sports too. How will the NBA proceed? It’s difficult to tell at this point, and there will likely be some compromise from the players, but there’s no question that an entire nation is watching. And decisions made in the next few weeks will no question impact the 2020-21 season.
