NBA announces 16 players test positive for COVID-19

As the NBA moves forward with its plan to resume the 2019-20 season in an Orlando/Disney bubble, one large aspect of this plan actually working was the original COVID-19 tests that were administered earlier this week. It was the first big step towards the NBA actually restarting.

Friday morning, the NBA finally released the results from all players that were tested. Per the announcement, 16 of the 302 players tested positive for COVID-19.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

"In tests conducted of 302 NBA players on June 23, 16 players have tested positive for the coronavirus.Any player who tested positive will remain in self-isolation until he satisfies public health protocols for discontinuing isolation and has been cleared by a physician."

On the surface, it’s tough to say whether the initial round of testing is a good or bad thing for the NBA. On one hand, you’d have to imagine that many of these players aren’t exactly isolating themselves to the full extent as of yet.

On the other hand, any positive tests are never a good thing. Especially considering that all it took was one positive result for the NBA to shut down the first time around. Then again, we are living in a much different world right now than in March.

For reference, here’s how the NBA’s initial testing compares to that of The Premier League.

The biggest obstacle that the NBA has on its hands now is trying to limit the amount of additional positive tests over the course of the next two weeks – when teams are scheduled to begin to make their trek into the bubble in Orlando.

This only works if many players and staff do their part. Over the next two weeks, limiting their exposure to the virus will be crucial. If the NBA’s plan is going to work, I’m not sure how many more positive tests it can take.

As mentioned above, many leagues have resumed play outside of the United States. Although, they haven’t had these many positive results in the first round of testing. And that could be a cause for concern for the league moving forward.
