NBA Rumors: Andre Drummond, Cleveland Cavaliers interested in an extension?
When the Cleveland Cavaliers traded for Andre Drummond at the 2020 NBA Trade Deadline, not many expected this to be a long-lasting pairing. Drummond was essentially an expiring contract (though, it appears he’ll opt-in for the 2020-21 season) and didn’t look like an ideal fit from a basketball perspective.
However, he’ll at least get one full year in the system in an attempt to figure out if this relationship could work out for the long-term. Even if you thought that the Cavs were simply taking advantage of a weak market when they acquired Drummond, it would be foolish of the team not to at least entertain the idea of it working.
In fact, the two sides reportedly have expressed interest in an extension. Drummond could sign an extension during the offseason or could wait until next year to do so. It’s all on the table for both Drummond and the Cavs.

"[via Cleveland.com]At this point, sources say, both sides have shown interest in an extension. But there’s so much to figure out before late October when Drummond could technically sign a new deal."
Andre Drummond in Cleveland
During the eight games that Drummond played with the Cavs, in which the team went 4-4, the big man averaged 18 points and 11 rebounds on 55 percent shooting from the field. The real concerns about potentially re-signing Drummond revolve around their crowded (and highly paid) frontcourt.
Cleveland already has Kevin Love and Tristan Thompson on the roster. Love is tied up for the foreseeable future and there have been whispers of the Cavs being interested in re-signing Thompson.
If so, it all gets complicated in the hypothetical of Drummond getting an extension too. Of course, this could all change on a dime should the team trade Kevin Love during the offseason. Though, at this point, who knows what the offseason is even going to look like in the NBA.
With its current climate, will there be any teams looking to add a big salary to its sheet?
The Cleveland Cavaliers are a talented group, but they need to decide which frontcourt players they’re going to move forward with. Will – or should – that be Andre Drummond?
