NBA individual awards to reflect pre-hiatus basketball

The NBA is slated to officially begin its restart within the next two weeks – team scrimmages between each other are expected to begin July 22 and the seeding games are expected to begin July 30 – but as far as the league’s individual awards, that has been completed.

According to a report from ESPN, the league has informed teams that the individual award voting will take place before the NBA’s restart and that it would only reflect the regular season prior to the hiatus.

Generally speaking, that makes the most sense. Especially considering the four-month layoff which could essentially have a drastic impact on how the remainder of the 2019-20 season is played out.

More from Sir Charles In Charge

"[via ESPN]The league told teams Friday that none of the seeding games will be taken into consideration for any postseason award, and that voting for those honors — such as All-NBA, rookie of the year and defensive player of the year — will be completed before the July 30 restart of the season at Walt Disney World."

Assuming this is indeed so, and there’s really no reason to believe that it won’t be, that means Giannis Antetokounmpo will likely win his second-straight NBA MVP award. If he could top that off with an NBA Championship in the restart, the 2019-20 season will be looked back at a huge success for the Milwaukee Bucks – especially in their continued recruitment on getting Giannis to re-sign long-term with the team.

In a way, the NBA’s restart will seem – and feel – like an entirely new season. Whether that’s a good thing or not remains to be seen. It’s difficult to predict how this season will be looked back on, but there’s no question that it will be unlike another before in history.

Hopefully, by this time next week, we’ll be talking about actual basketball. Here’s to hoping the NBA is about to have a great week.
