The safe pick: Anthony Edwards, G, Georgia
By far the safest pick for the Minnesota Timberwolves at No. 1 overall would be Anthony Edwards. He’s a player that could fit next to D’Angelo Russell, add value with his defensive potential to the backcourt, and has proven to be a scorer when called upon.
There are questions about his shooting, but he was still extremely productive during his freshman season without being the best or most consistent shooter. That could be viewed as a positive.
He has the size, length, and athleticism to translate to a good defender at the NBA level and could even be a versatile defender at that. Edwards is a player that will be taken in the top 3 and is probably the most NBA-ready contributor for any of the top 3-5 prospects in this draft.
Edwards might not have as high of a ceiling as some of the other prospects or bigger names, but he has all the tools to be a good, contributing NBA player as soon as he steps on the floor.
