NBA Mock Draft 9.0: LaMelo Ball falls out of the top 3; Knicks snag Obi Toppin
14. Boston Celtics – Patrick Williams, F, Florida State
Selection and commentary: Mike Zakarian
The Boston Celtics showed great determination and discipline selecting Patrick Williams instead of Seamus O’Houlihan out of Ireland University. The versatile Williams will add to the already impressively deep bench of wing players.
Coming in at 6-foot-7 out of Florida State, Williams brings a ton of potential and upside on both sides of the courts. Under the tutelage of Brad Stevens and the ability to play behind the likes of Jaylen, Tatum, and Hayward, Patrick should have the chance to round into shape without the pressure of performing immediately.
It’s not fair to the rest of the NBA that the Celtics wound up with someone like Patrick Williams this late in the draft. He’s exactly the type of player that thrives in the current style of basketball. A freakish athlete that can defend multiple positions while also carrying with him a ton of upside on the offensive end.
The one area to keep an eye on with Williams is his 3-point shooting. He shot 32 percent from the 3 his last year at FSU and that’s going to need to creep up to 35-37 to truly shine. If anything, the Celtics should be happy that next year they’ll actually be able to use on of their rookies.
