NBA Mock Draft 9.0: LaMelo Ball falls out of the top 3; Knicks snag Obi Toppin
17. Minnesota Timberwolves – Precious Achiuwa, F, Memphis
After selecting Anthony Edwards (who will be a defensive partner next to D’Angelo Russell in the backcourt) with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, it wouldn’t be surprising to try and pair Karl-Anthony Towns with a defensive partner too in the frontcourt. The best potential options at No. 17 is Precious Achiuwa.
Achiuwa might not be a name you’re familiar with, but he could end up being the best defender to emerge in this draft class. After a sensational freshman season at Memphis, in which he averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds, and nearly two blocks per game, it’ll be interesting to see how Achiuwa’s game translates to the NBA.
He has plenty to prove on the offensive end and is still considered particularly raw as an overall prospect, but he’s the type of athlete and prospect that the Wolves would be more than willing to take a chance on at this point in the NBA Draft.
