The New York Knicks should sign Fred VanVleet in free agency

After falling in the 2020 NBA Draft Lottery, it has become clear that the New York Knicks will have to address the point guard position either via free agency or trade during the offseason. At No. 8, it’s highly unlikely one of the top, high ceiling guards will be available. Nevertheless, the Knicks have already been linked to two point guards heading into the offseason.

It’s been long rumored that the Knicks will entertain the thought of trading for Chris Paul. Recently, another name that appears to be on New York’s radar (subscription required) is Fred VanVleet.

While there’s a strong chance that the Toronto Raptors will want to re-sign VanVleet, especially after the breakout season he enjoyed this year, he’s a player that would be an ideal fit for what the Knicks will be seeking this offseason.

New York has a solid starting core in RJ Barrett and Mitchell Robinson, however, a lead guard is something that the Knicks could benefit from. The Knicks are still very much a young team and need a veteran guard to take the reins until Barrett develops into the player that many expect him to be.

While Chris Paul is viewed as the ideal fit for such a role, let’s explore why Fred VanVleet could be a better option in free agency.
