New York Knicks: The case for signing Fred VanVleet in free agency
Fred VanVleet’s offensive fit on the Knicks
During the 2019-20 NBA season, the Knicks were one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the league, ranked 27th out of the 30 teams. They were also ranked 27th in overall offensive rating during the season. Marcus Morris and Julius Randle led the team in scoring, two names that could very well find themselves on different teams by the time next season begins.
Signing Fred VanVleet would help on both fronts. VanVleet is coming off a season in which he averaged 18 points, seven assists, and four rebounds per game. He also shot 39 percent from 3-point range on nearly seven attempts per contest. He’d be a good fit next to Barrett; has had success playing both on and off-ball next to Lowry with the Raptors.
VanVleet would help space the floor for both Barrett and Robinson and could carry some of the playmaking duties as well. He averaged seven assists per game and could help make Barrett’s life a lot easier on the offensive end of the floor.
VanVleet would be inserted into the starting lineup and the Knicks would immediately improve on the offensive side of the ball. It should be mentioned he’s also a pest on the defensive end, despite only standing at 6-foot-1.
